Bong County – Youth Action Lead Liberia, a youth-driven non-governmental organization, has concluded a one-day assessment in Electoral District #4, Bong County, aimed at identifying mining-affected communities and addressing environmental and legal concerns.

Speaking during the assessment, Mr. Edwin Boakai, Chief Executive Director of Youth Action Lead Liberia, emphasized that the initiative seeks to promote climate justice, mining safety regulations, and environmental best practices in the county.

Boakai stated that his organization will work closely with the Liberian government, the Ministry of Land, Mines, and Energy, and legal experts to educate communities on their rights, responsibilities, and the obligations of mining companies under social agreements.

The project, titled “Empowering Community Climate Justice through Legal Empowerment Strategies and Safe Artisanal Mining Practices in Liberia,” is set to last two years and will cover over ten affected mining communities.

During the visit, local authorities from Gbonkona and Yowee expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting that many mining companies fail to honor their social agreements, leaving communities without the promised benefits. They urged Youth Action Lead Liberia to be their voice in engaging mining companies and ensuring accountability.

The organization’s intervention is expected to bring relief to affected communities, fostering legal awareness and environmental sustainability in Bong County’s mining sector.
