Palala, Bong County – Residents of Palala, Kpaai District, Bong County, are growing increasingly frustrated over the lack of progress on a planned sports park project that was expected to transform the area. Nearly a year after its inspection, there has been no visible development at the site, raising concerns about the status and future of the initiative.

The project, reportedly funded through ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) corporate social responsibility contributions, was announced as a $1.5 million investment aimed at providing recreational and sporting opportunities for the youth of Bong County. On April 26, 2024, Senators Prince Kermue Moye Sr. and Johnny K. Kpehe Sr., along with Representative Prince Konah of Electoral District #1, visited the proposed site along the Gbarnga-Ganta Highway, signaling what many believed was a commitment to swift implementation.

Growing Frustration Among Residents

Despite the high-profile inspection and promises made, community members say they have seen no signs of construction or any updates on the project’s progress. Over the past two weeks, requests for information about the project’s status have gone unanswered, further fueling speculation and frustration among local residents.

“We were excited when we heard about this project because our young people have very few recreational opportunities,” said Palala resident Moses Kpormah. “Now, almost a year later, nothing has been done, and no one is telling us what is going on.”

Others worry that the project may have been quietly abandoned. “We are hearing rumors that the project might be canceled, but no one has come forward to confirm or deny this,” said local youth leader Patricia Flomo. “If the project is still happening, we deserve to know when work will start. If it has been scrapped, the people of Bong County have a right to an explanation.”

Calls for Accountability

With mounting concerns, residents are calling on the county leadership and all stakeholders involved—including ArcelorMittal Liberia, Bong County authorities, and local lawmakers—to provide clarity on the situation.

“We need answers,” said community elder Joseph Kollie. “This is not just about a sports park; it’s about accountability. If AML committed funds for this project, where is the money? If there are delays, what is causing them?”

What’s Next?

As uncertainty lingers, community members are urging Senators Moye and Kpehe, Representative Konah, and county officials to break their silence and offer a transparent update on the status of the Palala sports park project.

With unconfirmed reports suggesting the project may be canceled, the people of Bong County are demanding official communication and a clear explanation. Until then, concerns will continue to grow over what many fear may be another abandoned development promise.
