Monrovia, Liberia – July 1, 2025:
In a bold step to address the growing need for access to clean and safe drinking water, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) and the World Bank, today launched an emergency water connection project targeting Montserrado County.
The initiative, which falls under the broader Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP), is set to provide 2,500 new household water connections in several underserved communities, including Bushrod Island, Central Monrovia, Southern Paynesville, and Omega.
With a total investment of $1,486,887.50, the project is being executed by Tengda Construction Ltd., a firm known for its expertise in the water and sewer sector. The goal is to improve residents’ access to safe water, which remains a critical challenge for many urban dwellers in the capital region.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, officials from LWSC and the Ministry of Public Works emphasized the urgent need for reliable water infrastructure, particularly in the face of climate change, flooding, and rapid urban growth.
“This project is not just about water — it’s about health, dignity, and resilience,” said an LWSC representative. “The collaboration between government and international partners like the World Bank is paving the way for long-term urban transformation.”
The Liberia Urban Resilience Project, a six-year partnership between the Government of Liberia and the World Bank, aims to improve urban planning, enhance climate resilience, and expand essential service delivery in Liberia’s most vulnerable urban zones.
Community members in the targeted areas have welcomed the project, expressing hope that it will reduce their dependency on unsafe water sources and improve daily living conditions.
Construction and installation activities under the emergency water connection project are expected to commence immediately, with LWSC promising regular updates to the public on progress and completion timelines.
