Former Representative, Moses Acarous Gray

MONROVIA, Liberia — Former Montserrado County District #8 lawmaker Moses Acarous Gray has issued a controversial warning that is drawing sharp reactions across the country, cautioning that Liberia could face serious unrest if former President George Manneh Weah is taken to court by the ruling Unity Party–led government.

Speaking on OK FM, Gray declared: “The day the Unity Party takes George Weah to court, the entire country will shut down, and President Boakai will not be at his residence.” The remarks have been widely interpreted as a prediction of mass protests and potential instability should any legal action be pursued against the former president.

The statement has heightened political tension, raising concerns among civil society actors, security analysts, and ordinary citizens about its implications for peace, rule of law, and democratic governance. Critics warn that such rhetoric could undermine public confidence in the justice system by suggesting that certain individuals are beyond legal accountability.

Analysts note that Liberia’s post-war democracy is built on the principle that no one is above the law, and any attempt—real or perceived—to shield political figures from judicial scrutiny risks eroding the country’s fragile peace and institutional credibility. Others caution that inflammatory statements could incite fear, provoke unrest, and negatively affect investor confidence and national cohesion.

The government has not officially responded to Gray’s comments. However, observers are urging political leaders to exercise restraint and promote dialogue, respect for due process, and national stability.

As Liberia continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, many citizens say the focus should remain on peaceful coexistence, accountability, and the supremacy of the law, rather than statements that could inflame tensions and threaten national security.
