Margibi County, Liberia — The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has taken decisive disciplinary action against its Margibi County Commander, Special Agent Mentor A. Yormie, following the escape of a female drug suspect from custody in the county.
In a statement issued for immediate release, the LDEA announced that Special Agent Yormie has been disrobed and removed from duty with immediate effect and handed over to the agency’s Internal Board of Inquiry and Professional Standards for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s escape.
According to the LDEA, the suspect was being held on narcotics-related charges when she reportedly fled custody under circumstances that remain unclear. The incident has raised serious concerns about custodial procedures, security lapses, and supervisory oversight at the Margibi County command.
LDEA leadership emphasized that the action reflects the agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward breaches of protocol, especially at a time when Liberia continues to battle the growing threat of drug trafficking and abuse.
> “Accountability is non-negotiable in our fight against drugs,” the LDEA stated in its press release.
“Agent Mentor A. Yormie has been disrobed pending a thorough investigation. The Board’s findings and recommendations will guide the next steps, fully in line with the LDEA Code of Conduct.”
While details of how the suspect escaped have not yet been disclosed, security sources suggest that the case is being treated as a serious internal failure, prompting the immediate intervention of professional standards investigators.
The development has triggered public concern and community reactions across Margibi County, with local leaders and civil society actors calling on the LDEA to ensure full transparency and accountability in order to restore public trust in law enforcement.
In response, the LDEA has assured the public that it will provide regular updates as the investigation progresses and has intensified efforts to recapture the escaped suspect. The agency also pledged to strengthen internal controls and preventive measures across its county commands to avert similar incidents.
The case underscores the persistent challenges confronting Liberia’s anti-drug institutions, where high-profile security breaches can undermine public confidence and weaken ongoing enforcement operations.
In its statement, the LDEA also renewed its call for public cooperation in combating drug trafficking and related crimes, urging citizens to report suspicious activities through its hotlines:
0777-133-333 / 0888-133-333
